Diesel hits record $6.51 as some Republicans break with Trump over Iran war

Diesel hit a record national average of $6.51 a gallon Monday, up nearly a dollar in a month and almost three dollars over last year, as the U.S. continues its unauthorized military conflict with Iran. Gasoline averaged $4.47, also sharply higher than a year ago, according to AAA figures cited in the reporting.

Seven House Republicans, including two Iowans in tight reelection races, broke with the president last week to support restricting his war powers, and the Senate is expected to vote on a similar measure this week. Iowa's Chuck Grassley publicly pressed Trump to embargo diesel exports, warning the prices are ‘KILLING FARMERS INCOME,’ but a White House official said Monday there are no such plans.

Trump attributed the price spike to Russian refinery damage from the Ukraine war rather than his own Iran conflict, while Vice President Vance told reporters the administration is ‘doing everything we can’ and floated states suspending their gas taxes. Meanwhile Iran-backed Houthi rebels have widened the conflict by fighting for control of another key oil shipping route, and the State Department has issued travel warnings for Americans in the region.

When the price of diesel jumps a dollar in a month during a war you started, blaming somebody else's war is a neat trick, but neighbors who haul grain for a living aren't buying it any easier than they buy gas. Grassley wants an embargo, the White House says no plans, and the vice president suggests states eat the tax instead of the administration eating the problem. That's not leadership, that's passing the collection plate around the room while insisting the church roof isn't your leak.
