A HuffPost wellness piece reports that marshmallow root extract, an herb called Althaea officinalis, may ease a lingering cough by coating the throat in a sticky substance doctors call mucilaginous.

The article cites a handful of small studies from 2013 through 2021 suggesting the extract reduces throat irritation and that one 2018 study found users felt relief in roughly ten minutes. Doctors quoted stress it works best for minor coughs without other major symptoms, and that you should still talk to a physician before trying it.

Regular marshmallows, the kind you roast, will not do anything for your cough, since modern ones are not made with the actual root extract.

A drugstore tea bag getting treated like a medical breakthrough is nothing new, but it is a little funny how many caveats it took to get there. Ten minutes of relief and a pile of 'talk to your doctor first' disclaimers is about as exciting as watching paint dry, but at least nobody's selling you snake oil here, just slow-release hype about a houseplant.
