More GOP lawmakers break with Trump on Iran as gas prices keep climbing

The House passed a War Powers Resolution 220-204 requiring congressional approval for Trump to continue military action in Iran, the third such measure since June, as diesel hit a record $6.31 a gallon and gas averaged $4.37. Seven Republicans, including Iowa's Zach Nunn and Marianette Miller-Meeks and South Carolina's Nancy Mace, broke with the party.

Nunn, an Air Force veteran, cited two Iowa service members killed by an Iranian drone in Kuwait and said Congress owes families ‘constitutional oversight.’ Miller-Meeks said she won't vote for ‘another forever war’ while Iowans pay too much at the pump, adding the Iranian regime has been ‘defanged.’

Rep. Thomas Massie, one of four Republicans now three-for-three on such votes, also introduced eight articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the war. The Trump administration maintains the resolutions are unconstitutional and has dismissed them, despite the Senate having voted on similar measures 13 times.

When the price of a fill-up starts doing more to change minds than seven months of debate, you learn something about where Washington actually keeps its ears. The administration can call these votes unconstitutional all it wants, but that's a lot of Republicans risking primary trouble to say the same thing three times running. A war that drags on long enough to get its own reelection math is not exactly the quick, decisive operation anybody promised.
