A Financial Times poll conducted by Focaldata found Trump's approval rating at 33% among registered voters, a record low since FT began polling in May and down 3 points from the prior month. Approval among Republicans also fell to a series-low 72%, and only 53% of Republicans approved of his handling of jobs and the economy, down nearly 8 points.
Almost two-thirds of respondents said the economy is headed the wrong direction, and 57% said their own finances have worsened under Trump. The poll also found 56% opposition to a 50% tariff on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods, which prompted retaliatory Canadian tariffs of up to 50%.
Forty-six percent of voters said Trump is making it harder for Republican congressional candidates to win in November, a finding that arrives just as the RNC prepares a midterm convention in Dallas where Trump is set to deliver the keynote. Other recent polls, including an Aug. 17 Ipsos/Reuters survey, have also placed his approval at 33%.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Thirty-three percent is the kind of number a person hits when even his own side starts checking their watches during the speech. The tariffs on Canada were supposed to be a show of strength, and instead 60% of independents and a third of Republicans looked at the price of groceries and said no thanks. Handing the microphone to the man dragging down the ticket for the big convention next week is either loyalty or a dare, and it is getting harder to tell which.
