Trump announced via Truth Social that up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef could enter the U.S. tariff-free, claiming a commitment that the beef would sell 25% below current market prices and would 'reduce prices for Americans' while letting the domestic herd rebuild. United States Cattlemen's Association president Justin Tupper called the move a betrayal of 'America First,' warning it would weaken markets and gamble with food safety.

Tupper told MS NOW the imported beef won't meet the same standards as U.S. product and is unlikely to lower store prices or help ranchers grow their herds. Trump declined to name which countries would benefit, telling reporters 'I don't wanna say,' and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said she was 'not privy to talk about that' when pressed. Tupper said support for Trump among cattlemen has 'taken a hit,' though he maintains 'a lot of support' remains.

An administration that campaigned on putting American producers first is now unable, or unwilling, to say which foreign producers are getting the tariff break, which is an odd kind of transparency for a policy sold as a consumer win. When the industry group most affected says its own members feel betrayed, 'what the voters want' starts to sound like a claim made on behalf of voters who weren't consulted.
