A bomb planted under a car's chassis killed Roman Syromyatnikov in Novomoskovsk, in Russia's Tula region, according to Ukrainian monitoring channel Exilenova+ and the anonymous Russian channel VChK-OGPU; a local outlet confirmed the death. Syromyatnikov had worked at a Federal Penitentiary Service facility in Tula during the 2010s and signed a 2023 contract with Russia's Defense Ministry before returning to the region for medical treatment in late 2024.

Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office had accused Syromyatnikov, an employee of Penal Colony No. 1, of torturing and beating Ukrainian prisoners of war held there in 2022. He had also said he worked as a life-safety instructor at a Novomoskovsk college since at least 2021, and independent outlet iStories said it could not confirm his presence in the penitentiary system that year.
