Graduate student Madison Askins has filed a negligence suit in Leon County Circuit Court against Florida State University, alleging the Student Union lacked adequate security ahead of the 2025 shooting that killed two and injured six. The six-page complaint argues FSU owed her a duty of reasonable care and breached it by failing to inspect the area where the shooting occurred. Represented by Morgan & Morgan, Askins is seeking more than $50,000 in damages.
The alleged shooter, Phoenix Ikner, remains jailed awaiting a trial now pushed to summer 2027. Separately, families of the two people killed have sued ChatGPT's maker, alleging the shooter was 'co-conspiring' with the chatbot before the attack, and Florida has filed its own suit against the company. FSU did not respond to a request for comment.
