What Trump’s new study says about support for trans rights — and why experts are worried

The Department of Health and Human Services released a study claiming that support for transgender people correlates with justifying political violence, along with agreement with statements like ‘all political conservatives are fools.’ The research was conducted by Rutgers University alongside the conservative Manhattan Institute and the Network Contagion Research Institute.

Political scientists who reviewed the study, including a University of Toledo professor, called it a fishing expedition that draws causal conclusions from correlation and raised ethical objections to asking respondents about political assassination attempts. Neither the study's authors, HHS, nor Rutgers responded to requests for comment.

Policy analysts, including one from the pro-democracy Chamberlain Network, warned the report appears designed for political use against LGBTQ+ supporters and the broader left, extending prior administration rhetoric linking transgender people to violence.

Ask enough questions and you can prove almost anything, which is how a survey ends up connecting who you're kind to with whether you'd throw a punch. Any grade schooler who's watched roosters crow at sunrise could tell you the sun does not come up because of it. Notice too that when the reporters called, the people who wrote it, the department that paid for it, and the university that lent its name all found something else to do.
