The White House promoted an op-ed by U.S. Central Command's Adm. Brad Cooper describing his visit to the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has spent more than 260 days at sea including over 150 in a combat zone.

Cooper writes that complaints about food, hot water and morale raised in earlier media coverage were 'old news,' already resolved by leadership, and that the crew, while tired, is 'firing on all cylinders' in what he calls one of the most operationally intense deployments in modern naval history.

Remarkable how every problem the press finds turns out to have been quietly fixed just before the admiral arrived to check. The military's ability to declare complaints 'old news' the moment someone repeats them into a microphone remains its most reliable weapons system. If the crew is firing on all cylinders after 260 days at sea, perhaps the boast worth printing is that nobody asked whether they should still be out there.
