Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans held a hearing on transgender athletes in women's sports, timed less than six weeks before midterm elections in which the GOP is defending its majorities. Chairman Chuck Grassley and other Republicans framed the issue as protecting women's opportunities, while Democrats largely skipped the hearing, with ranking member Dick Durbin calling it a distraction from cost-of-living concerns voters actually rank as priorities.
Durbin cited a 2024 hearing in which the NCAA's president said fewer than 10 of more than half a million college athletes nationwide were transgender. Republicans followed the hearing with a press conference featuring senators and athletes continuing to press the issue, while a separate bipartisan bill regulating college athlete compensation continues to advance without preempting state trans-athlete laws.

When the head of a party's own witness pool from two years back put the number at under ten athletes out of half a million, and the hearing still runs a full session plus a press conference, you start counting the cameras instead of the athletes. Nobody's against fairness in sports, but a policy fight this small getting this much stage time six weeks before an election tells you the audience matters more than the roster. Grocery bills don't hold a press conference, so maybe that's the real problem.
