Vnukovo, Zhukovsky, and Domodedovo airports were shut down for roughly six to seven hours following drone attacks overnight into October 9, according to independent Russian outlet Agentstvo and Russia's own aviation agency, Rosaviatsia. Counting restrictions that began the previous afternoon, two of Moscow's three main hubs were effectively grounded for about 11 hours total.
The disruption follows a pattern that has intensified all year: long flight delays and cancellations have doubled in the first nine months of 2026, and total delays are up 20%, per Rosaviatsia's own figures. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin claimed air defenses downed more than 80 drones on October 6 and 180 of 620 drones during an August 18 attack, while Russia's Defense Ministry claimed its forces intercepted 791 drones across various regions.
The strikes also sparked a fire at a Wildberries warehouse in Moscow Oblast, damaging the facility.
