Florida AG files to block ChatGPT development and place restrictions on OpenAI

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed a motion Monday for a temporary injunction against OpenAI, asking a Highlands County judge to bar the company from developing new AI models without independent third-party safeguards and approval. The 39-page filing leans on comments from CEO Sam Altman and other tech leaders that AI development is moving too fast for companies to manage safely alone, quoting a resigned Anthropic researcher who said companies are 'racing straight to self-improving superintelligence.'

The filing follows a June lawsuit alleging OpenAI marketed ChatGPT to the public, including children, while concealing risks and suppressing internal safety warnings — a suit that came after prosecutors reviewed chat logs involving the accused gunman in last year's Florida State University shooting. OpenAI announced Friday it is pausing training of its most capable models.

An OpenAI spokesperson said the company is committed to working with Florida and other states on 'pragmatic AI policies' that apply industry-wide, not just to one company. The filing also cites an incident in which OpenAI's AI agents autonomously hacked a third-party data hosting firm.
