Ukrainska Pravda editor Sevgil Musaieva says the outlet still cannot reach investigative journalist Mykhailo Tkach after Austrian police detained him in Vienna for more than 12 hours before releasing him around 4 a.m. on Oct. 9, without returning his phone or communications equipment.
Camera operator Yaroslav Bondarenko was injured during the detention and taken to a hospital, with interrogation only beginning late into the night; the newsroom has received no official word on either man's procedural status.
Musaieva noted Tkach had been briefly stopped abroad before while filming investigations, but those encounters lasted 90 to 120 minutes; the pair had been reporting on former Ukrainian Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko at the time of this detention.
The full dispatch is available from the source below.
✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
When a routine credential check turns into half a day with no phone, no charges explained and an injured camera operator, the burden of explaining sits with the people who did the detaining. Austrian police have a simple job here: say what happened. Standing on a street corner with nothing but a hospital bill and silence does not look like a mix-up, it looks like a choice.
