Assault groups on both sides of the Russia-Ukraine war are now infiltrating kilometers behind enemy positions, sometimes more than 10 kilometers deep, rather than the hundreds of meters typical of earlier small-unit tactics. These lightly supplied units operate cut off from main forces, aiming to destabilize defenses and threaten drone operators.

The result is a front where battle formations from both armies are intermixed, control of roads and towns is unstable, and villages can change hands several times in a week. The report also notes rising intensity of rear-area strikes, including on warehouses tied to online marketplaces and other businesses.
