The U.S. has designated Min Zin, a Myanmar-focused political analyst detained in China's Yunnan province on espionage suspicions, as 'wrongfully detained,' joining Dr. Youlin Chen as the second such case. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the determination; officials say Min Zin was in China at the Chinese government's own invitation to attend an academic conference.

China's Foreign Ministry maintains he is held on suspicion of endangering national security. The designation lands a month before Xi Jinping's visit to Washington, amid an administration that has traded warm words with Xi personally while rarely criticizing China's human rights record — except, notably, right now.
