An electrical fire shut down much of downtown Tallahassee early Tuesday, with police barricading streets near the Leon County Courthouse after manhole covers were reportedly blasted into the air. The Tallahassee Fire Department responded to an initial alarm at 5:15 a.m. and ruled out a feared gas leak, while the city traced the trouble to a paving project on Monroe Street run by the Florida Department of Transportation.
City utilities cut power to the grid to let crews work safely, which also knocked out traffic lights around the Capitol Complex; generators were brought in for key intersections. By early afternoon, 153 customers downtown were still without power while multiple city, county and state agencies coordinated on scene.
The full dispatch is available from the source below.
✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A road crew managed to turn a paving job into a morning of blown manholes and blacked-out traffic lights right next to the courthouse, and somehow that counts as routine infrastructure work these days. It's a good reminder that the most disruptive thing near a capitol building isn't always the politics. Sometimes it's just the pavement.
