Liubov Rozhanska, a Ukrainian citizen, was detained in Kazakhstan at Russia's request while traveling to retrieve her grandson, whose mother had taken him to Russia in 2021 and never returned despite Ukrainian courts, including the Supreme Court, ruling he should live with his father.

Russia's FSB in Kaliningrad sought an arrest warrant against Rozhanska for attempted kidnapping just as relatives of the boy's mother arranged to hand him over to her. She was detained at the Astana airport after flying in from Istanbul, held until her detention period expired with no pretrial restriction assigned, then released around October 4 and eventually returned to Odesa via the Ukrainian embassy grounds.
