The White House withdrew Richard 'Lance' Schroyer's nomination to lead ICE on Thursday, before he received a confirmation hearing before the Senate Homeland Security Committee. Committee chair Rand Paul's office said he had no objections to Schroyer, a former Oklahoma state trooper and ally of DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin.
The withdrawal appeared in a brief statement on the White House website alongside several other nominees, with no explanation offered and no request for comment answered. ICE remains under acting director David Venturella, a former GEO Group vice president, who took over after Todd Lyons stepped down following the shooting of two U.S. citizens by immigration officials in Minneapolis.
The Senate has not confirmed a permanent ICE director in 11 years.

Pulling a nominee nobody had even objected to, and saying nothing about why, is the kind of quiet you notice more than any announcement would have made. Eleven years without a confirmed director running the agency tasked with the administration's signature deportation push is its own kind of statement. The acting man in charge came from the company that gets paid by the bed to hold the people ICE picks up, which is a tidy arrangement for everyone except the taxpayer and the person in the bed.
