Edison unlikely to escape liability in Eaton Fire lawsuit

A Los Angeles judge indicated she is unlikely to let Edison International escape liability in the mass tort over the Eaton Fire, which killed 19 people and destroyed more than 9,000 homes in Altadena.

More than 47,000 plaintiffs are suing both Southern California Edison and its parent company, alleging failures to maintain equipment and shut off power despite warnings of dangerous winds; Edison International argued it has no control over its subsidiary's equipment decisions.

Edison International's own CEO has repeatedly said the company's equipment was ‘likely the cause’ of the fire, a position a plaintiffs' attorney noted contradicts the company's courtroom argument; the first bellwether trial starts January 25, 2027.
