Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, alleging it conspired with other Blue Cross entities nationally to divide markets and restrict competition, which allowed it to overcharge the state for employee health plans for years. The suit also claims the company's dominant market position, 65% of all health insurance products and 79% of the PPO market in Michigan, let it pay providers below cost, forcing some to cut staff or close.
State insurance regulators cite 2026 premium increases of up to 24% for individual plans and 11.2% for small groups. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan says it was ‘blindsided’ by the announcement, has not been served with the suit, and disputes the characterization of an uncompetitive market, pointing to nearly 90 years of coverage across the state.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Controlling 79% of a market and calling that healthy competition is the kind of claim that only makes sense if you're the one holding the 79%. Ninety years of history gets cited as proof of good service, but longevity in a market nobody else can crack is also just another word for a moat. The jury trial, if it happens, will be the first time anyone outside the company gets to look closely at the books behind those premium hikes.
