President Trump traveled to Knoxville for the Tennessee-Texas game, timing his motorcade to arrive as the anthem played and leaving before the fourth quarter, according to reporters traveling with him.

Coaches for both schools had warned all week that Secret Service protocols could knock out coach-to-player headset communications whenever the president entered, left, or moved within the stadium. ABC and ESPN reported both schools coordinated audio channels with the Secret Service beforehand, with an official timeout available if a serious disruption occurred.

Tennessee opened gates 30 minutes early and offered half-price concessions to manage the crowd, and stands were nearly full an hour before kickoff. A president watching a football game is not news, but a coaching staff building contingency plans around when he walks through a tunnel sure is something. The stadium did its part, opened the gates early, sold cheap nachos, and hoped the headsets held. That is a strange kind of home-field disadvantage to hand two teams that spent all season preparing for everything except a security perimeter.
