Trinity Health in Livonia, Michigan announced it is laying off 557 workers, citing federal cuts to Medicare and Medicaid tied to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The report notes 23 Michigan healthcare providers are now at risk of cutting services or closing, and nonpartisan estimates project between 171,000 and 355,000 Michiganders could lose coverage.

Michigan's Medicaid budget is projected to drop by $1 billion by 2028 and $10.8 billion by 2034, with more than 221,000 residents already having lost Medicaid, CHIP, or ACA coverage since the law passed. Senate candidate Mike Rogers has claimed the law protects Medicaid and has a voting record of opposing Medicaid expansions dating back to 2003.

Michigan's full Republican congressional delegation voted for the bill, with members publicly calling it a win worth celebrating at the time it passed.

A senator can call a cut a protection all he wants, but a pink slip at the hospital down the road tends to settle the argument. Foam is cheap, payroll is not, and Trinity Health just found out which one the law actually pays for. When the same politicians who cheered the vote go quiet on the layoffs, that quiet says plenty.
