Environmentalists say Everglades further damaged by removal of Alligator Alcatraz

Environmental groups Friends of the Everglades and the Center for Biological Diversity have amended their lawsuit against the South Florida detention center known as Alligator Alcatraz, arguing that even tearing the facility down is causing fresh environmental harm. Despite Governor Ron DeSantis announcing the center's closure in June, the groups say heavy machinery, trucks and unmitigated dust have continued at the site through at least August.

The complaint cites 20 acres of new pavement over previously permeable Everglades land, along with leftover trenches, rebar, asphalt piles and razor-wire fencing that removal work could further disturb through excavation and runoff. The groups say ongoing activity threatens the endangered Florida panther and Florida bonneted bat by degrading habitat they need to survive.

The case builds on a 2025 lawsuit, joined originally by the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida, that argued the facility was built without required environmental review. The 11th Circuit has twice let the facility keep operating during litigation, and the groups are now seeking an order blocking any further development or unauthorized use of the site.
