Slotkin, bipartisan group of lawmakers introduce bill to improve ovarian cancer prevention and care

Senator Elissa Slotkin, joined by Republican Senator Katie Britt, introduced the Ovarian Cancer IMPACT Act to expand genetic counseling, hereditary risk assessment, and access to gynecologic oncology specialists, particularly via telehealth in rural and underserved areas. A companion bill was introduced in the House by Rep. Rosa DeLauro and Rep. Don Bacon.

Slotkin's press release notes ovarian cancer is the fifth-leading cause of cancer deaths among U.S. women, with a five-year survival rate above 90% when caught early, though most cases are diagnosed late. Slotkin has said she lost both her mother and grandmother to the disease.

The American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists has endorsed the bill, with its CEO citing salpingectomy, a fallopian tube removal procedure, as an evidence-based prevention strategy that needs fewer access barriers.
