Ethiopia's federal army says about 300 fighters from the Tigray People's Liberation Front surrendered along the Tekeze River corridor, handing over more than 280 weapons, as fears grow of renewed conflict following a 2020-2022 war that killed roughly 600,000 people according to the African Union. The military claims the fighters cited discontent with TPLF's war preparations and forced recruitment of young Tigrayans, allegations also documented separately by AFP and Human Rights Watch.

Both the federal government and TPLF have built up forces near the border in recent months, and federal drone strikes hit military positions in August and September without official comment. A TPLF vice president declined to address the surrender claim, and Tigray, once home to about 6 million people, remains economically depleted with several hundred thousand still displaced.
