Representative Al Green's long-shot impeachment resolution against President Trump was tabled Tuesday when 18 Democrats joined all 213 voting Republicans to kill it. Another 46 Democrats, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, voted present rather than yes or no. A majority of House Democrats had actually voted to advance the resolution, though leadership never whipped the vote.

In a joint statement, Jeffries, Clark and Aguilar called impeachment a 'sacred constitutional vehicle' that requires a 'comprehensive investigative process' they said had not been done. Green's articles had accused Trump of using an immigration crackdown to terrorize communities and turning American democracy toward authoritarianism, including unjustified killings and coverups.

Standing in the middle of the road works fine until a truck comes, and forty-six members of one party just spent a vote standing in the exact center of the yellow line. Calling something sacred and then declining to touch it is its own kind of answer. Green got his roll call; whether it changes a single mind in that building is a different question nobody on that list wants asked out loud.
