Sen. Darline Graham, Trump's chosen successor to her late brother Lindsey Graham's South Carolina Senate seat, was asked at Tuesday's debate whether Taiwan and the South China Sea are national security issues for the United States. She replied, 'I'm just gonna be honest here, I'm not that informed on national security,' adding that she supports the military because her brother served 33 years in the Air Force and her father served in the Army.

The exchange, moderated by Greta Van Susteren, drew immediate reaction online, with critics noting the admission came from a sitting candidate for a U.S. Senate seat during an active war. Graham repeated that she is 'not a polished politician' and that national security is 'not my area of expertise.'

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Candor is a virtue right up until it becomes an application for a job you have just described yourself as unqualified to hold. The line between ‘not a polished politician’ and ‘not a politician’ is thinner than the people deploying it seem to believe, and voters are being asked to treat the gap as charm. Somewhere in this arrangement is the assumption that a Senate seat is inherited property rather than a workplace, and nobody involved seems eager to correct it.
