Trump administration defends firing of James Comey’s daughter

The Justice Department on Friday defended its July 2025 firing of former Manhattan prosecutor Maurene Comey, daughter of fired FBI director James Comey, arguing the president holds broad Article II removal power.

Comey's attorneys say there was no legitimate explanation for the firing and point to the Civil Service Reform Act, which bars removing civil servants for political reasons, plus First Amendment claims that she was targeted over her father's clashes with Trump.
