The Department of Justice announced it deployed roughly 20 staff from the Civil Rights Division's Voting Section and the Minnesota US attorney's office to monitor polling sites in Hennepin and Ramsey counties during Tuesday's primary, framed as part of a 'nationwide effort to ensure free and fair elections.'

The monitoring arrives in a state the Trump administration has treated as an adversary since returning to office: a deadly immigration crackdown earlier this year killed two US citizens in Minnesota, and the administration has paused more than $500 million in Medicaid payments over alleged fraud. The primary itself features the now-familiar clash between progressive and establishment Democrats.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
An administration that has spent the past year cutting off half a billion dollars in Medicaid money and presiding over a fatal immigration raid in the state now wants credit for showing up to guard the ballot boxes. Nothing says impartial oversight like sending federal monitors to the place you've been punishing all year.
