Seven members of the Guarani community from Kalipety village, including two children, were killed August 14 when a grain trailer detached from its towing truck and struck their car in central Brazil, according to Mongabay's reporting.

A witness told police the truck driver fled after the collision, which caused both vehicles to catch fire and left the bodies unidentifiable by conventional means; community members have since named the victims.

Among the dead was Karaí Tiago Honório dos Santos, a prominent Indigenous rights coordinator who once led a shareholder campaign against railway operator Rumo, resulting in a $13 million environmental and compensation agreement; his wife, sister, and two children were also killed.
