Greg Abbott sued after refusing to extradite ICE agent charged in shooting

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has sued Texas Governor Greg Abbott to force the extradition of ICE agent Christian Castro, who faces charges including four counts of second-degree assault over a January shooting in Minneapolis during Operation Metro Surge. Castro is accused of firing through a home's front door and hitting Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in the leg, then falsely accusing Sosa-Celis and another man, Alfredo Alejandro Aljorna, of attacking an officer — charges a federal judge later dismissed. Both men were in the U.S. legally.

Castro, held in Cameron County jail since his May arrest, faces release under Texas law if Abbott doesn't sign a rendition warrant within 90 days, a deadline Ellison says hits next week. Abbott's office declined to comment on the pending extradition, instead pointing to Abbott's prior remark that he doesn't 'trust Tim Walz on anything.' Operation Metro Surge, the DHS immigration operation that led to Castro's alleged shooting, also saw ICE and Border Patrol agents fatally shoot two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, within a three-week span — killings that sparked nationwide unrest and are under separate Hennepin County investigation. Castro is the second federal immigration agent charged by Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty this year, and if convicted he faces three to seven years in prison.
