Economist Paul Krugman wrote in a Substack post that Trump is in a period he calls 'sundowning' and will grow more dangerous if Democrats retake Congress in the midterms, arguing Trump would see any loss as America failing him rather than the reverse. Krugman argued the bigger story behind Trump's United Nations speech, in which he threatened to annihilate Iran and cited invented economic figures, was not the belligerence itself but what he called an unmistakable mental decline.

Krugman pointed to Trump's earlier demand that he receive the Nobel Peace Prize as evidence of the pattern, and tied it to what he described as squandered military credibility and munitions from the Iran conflict.
