The Ninth Circuit issued a temporary administrative stay blocking a trial judge's order that had reinstated Roger Rogoff as U.S. attorney for the Western District of Washington, after President Trump had him removed less than an hour after he was sworn in this past July.
U.S. District Judge Stanley Bastian had ruled the administration exceeded its authority in firing Rogoff, who was appointed by the court itself after the Senate-confirmed post sat vacant since 2023. The Justice Department called that injunction 'unprecedented and indefensible,' arguing it left a prosecutor wielding federal power with no accountability to the president.
Rogoff, an Obama appointee, did not oppose the stay but said he doesn't concede the administration will win on the merits, and noted the office remains led by what he calls an unlawfully appointed head while the fight continues in court.

An hour. That's how long the man got to keep the job before somebody in personnel sent the email. The government's complaint is that nobody is accountable to the president here, but it was the government's own two-and-a-half-year vacancy that got the courts involved in the first place, and now everybody gets to argue about it on appeal instead of just picking up the phone to the Senate.
