Liechtenstein's princely house announced that succession rules will shift from male primogeniture to absolute primogeniture, meaning future firstborn children inherit the throne regardless of sex. Hereditary Prince Alois announced the change, approved by a two-thirds majority of voting family members.

The change won't affect the near-term line of succession — Alois's eldest child is 31-year-old Prince Joseph Wenzel — but formalizes a shift for future generations. Liechtenstein, a wealthy micro-nation of 40,000 with an unusually powerful monarchy, only granted women the vote in 1984, the last European country to do so.
