Frank Luntz told CNN that Donald Trump's push to get supporters to vote as if he were on the ballot is a “very dangerous” strategy, given that support for Trump is weaker now than in past election cycles. Luntz noted historical midterm patterns favor the party out of power, and that Trump-aligned turnout dropped in 2018 and 2022 when he wasn't personally on the ballot.

Luntz cited voter frustration with the affordability crisis, the administration's conflict with Iran, and what he called the “style and ugliness” of the moment as headwinds for Republican candidates. He allowed that if Trump succeeds in mobilizing his base anyway, an upset remains possible in November.

A pollster from the president's own side calling the turnout plan dangerous is not exactly a vote of confidence, it is more like a mechanic telling you the truck might make it to the next town over. The strategy boils down to convincing people to show up for someone who isn't running, banking on habit doing the work enthusiasm used to do. That is a lot of faith to put in muscle memory.
