Liubov Rozhanska, a Ukrainian citizen, was detained at Astana's airport after flying in from Istanbul to collect her grandson, who was to be brought from Russia under a 2025 Ukrainian Supreme Court ruling ordering the boy to live in Odesa. Russia requested her detention through the Collective Security Treaty Organization, and she now faces possible extradition over a child-abduction investigation her lawyers say dates to 2023.
Her lawyers say Russia's FSB in Kaliningrad was already preparing a wanted-list filing and seeking her extradition while the handover was being arranged, and a Kaliningrad court had ordered her held in custody back on August 27, before she ever traveled. They describe it as 'a fairly well-planned operation' and say the FSB set her up.

A grandmother flies out to pick up a child a court said belongs with his family, and ends up in a cell instead. The paperwork trail here tells its own story: the arrest warrant was ready before she even boarded a plane. That's not how a custody dispute is supposed to work, that's how a trap is set, and somebody built it well in advance.
