Andy Burnham is set to propose giving elected mayors approval power over developments larger than 150 homes or taller than 10 storeys, according to the Telegraph.

The plan would let mayors bypass local planning objections that have historically stalled housing projects, with full proposals due to be unveiled next week.

Cutting through local objections sounds efficient right up until the mayor doing the cutting disagrees with you. The pitch here is that centralizing power solves gridlock, a theory tested approximately every time anyone centralizes power. Worth watching whether ‘Nimby’ becomes shorthand for ‘anyone who asks a question’.
