Institute in Basic Life Principles wins discovery challenge

A Texas appeals court has conditionally granted mandamus relief to the Institute in Basic Life Principles, ordering a trial court to vacate its order compelling the group to answer interrogatories and turn over documents.

The underlying suit was brought by two sisters who allege that the organization's teachings, and those of founder Bill Gothard, enabled their father and older brother to abuse them. The appeals court found the trial judge failed to properly analyze how broad the discovery requests were before compelling compliance.
