Gilbert Trejo says his father, actor Danny Trejo, signed onto The Daily Wire's 'Pawn Shop' believing it was simply a nuanced drama, and only learned two weeks into filming that Ben Shapiro's company was behind it. According to the son, Danny, 82, had never heard of Shapiro and can't legally criticize the film, walk away, or even release the statement he wanted to, due to his contract.
The movie, about an ICE officer barricaded in a pawn shop during a protest, has already drawn criticism over a scene reportedly recreating the fatal shooting of Renée Good, an unarmed Minnesota woman killed by an ICE officer in January. Production was also temporarily halted after protests in Livingston, Montana, where the shoot was accused of blocking access to the town's only food pantry.
Gilbert Trejo accused Shapiro of turning the backlash into a publicity win at his father's expense, saying it made Latino critics 'look like angry fools' while boosting Shapiro's own profile. HuffPost says it has reached out to representatives for both Trejo and The Daily Wire.
