A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the Indonesian island of Flores early Saturday, killing at least fourteen people according to the national disaster mitigation agency BPBD, with numbers expected to rise as search and rescue continues.
The quake, centered just 15km deep and roughly 600 miles from Bali, triggered a tsunami warning that was lifted about three hours later, along with dozens of aftershocks including a 6.1 magnitude jolt. Video from the port in Maumere showed concrete breaking off a terminal building onto ferry passengers, some of whom fell into the sea when a gangway collapsed.
Around 2,000 people evacuated or relocated on their own, with authorities urging residents to stay away from coastlines and damaged buildings while assessments continue in the remote, mountainous region.
