Yemen health system at ‘breaking point’: WHO

The World Health Organization warned Tuesday that Yemen's health system is nearing 'breaking point' as renewed fighting between Houthi forces and Saudi-backed government troops has displaced at least 145,000 people this month alone. WHO emergency director Annette Heinzelmann said nine health facilities in Taiz, Lahj, and Hodeidah have been damaged, closed, or attacked, and that only about 60 percent of Yemen's health facilities were even functional before the latest escalation.

Yemen has recorded nearly 8,000 suspected cholera cases and 22 deaths this year, over 9,600 dengue cases with 37 deaths, and more than 22,000 suspected measles cases with 128 deaths. WHO has delivered nearly 60 tonnes of medical supplies to 40 facilities but says trauma kits and essential medicines are already at zero stock in its Aden warehouse, having secured only $2 million of the $9 million it says it needs.
