Presidential security experts note prior presidents have used decoy planes in war zones, but call the weeks-long secrecy here, including concealing the ruse from the traveling press entirely until The Washington Post's report, unprecedented for a trip that wasn't to a war zone.

A president who insists he doesn't worry about anything nonetheless arranged an elaborate multi-plane shell game to make sure he specifically wasn't on the plane everyone else was riding. Telling the people you left behind 'if I go, you go' after already ensuring you wouldn't go is not reassurance, it's a punchline. The secrecy lasted for weeks not because the threat demanded it, but because admitting the arrangement would have.
