Apple's iOS 27 update prompts users to opt in to sharing Siri, Dictation, and Translate audio and text so the company can improve its AI models. Apple says the data is tied to a rotating device identifier rather than a user's account, is accessible only to employees under confidentiality rules, and can be retained for up to two years.

Privacy experts told HuffPost there is little upside for users who opt in. Martin Shelton of the Freedom of the Press Foundation said he sees no benefit given the retention period, while technologist George Kamide called the arrangement unfair, saying individuals shouldn't be asked to improve the models of very large companies for nothing in return.

Kamide contrasted Apple's opt-in approach favorably against Meta, which faces a lawsuit over allegedly training AI on Facebook and Instagram photos without consent, a claim Meta disputes.

An opt-in box is a nice gesture right up until you notice the data can sit on a server for two years under a company's own house rules. Calling it the bare minimum, as one expert did, is about the most polite way to say a company found the smallest possible gesture and made a settings menu out of it. If the sales pitch needs a rotating identifier to sound reassuring, it probably wasn't that reassuring to begin with.
