President Trump described the Iran conflict as 'small potatoes' in Oval Office remarks Friday, comparing its toll favorably to Vietnam and other wars after ABC's Rachel Scott pressed him on 18 U.S. service members killed and more than 750 wounded since fighting began in late February. Trump argued the conflict, five months old, had prevented Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Democratic lawmakers, including several military veterans, condemned the remarks. Sen. Elizabeth Warren called it horrific language for a commander in chief to use about people who died serving the country; Sen. Chuck Schumer and Reps. Jason Crow and Mike Levin issued similar rebukes on social media.

Calling a war 'small potatoes' while families bury the people who fought it is the kind of arithmetic that only works if you've never had to do the math yourself. Comparing your dead to somebody else's dead like it's a batting average says plenty about what the number means to the person saying it. Eighteen families didn't get a smaller grief just because the tally came out lower than Vietnam's.
