Rep. Tom Tiffany, a Republican running for Wisconsin governor, said he and the pilot of a single-engine Bonanza swam to safety after the aircraft lost power approaching Wausau Downtown Airport and made an emergency landing in Lake Wausau. Tiffany wrote on X that they called 911 as the plane began to submerge, then exited and swam to shallow water to await rescue by boat. Both men were treated for minor injuries at a hospital.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Crowley said he was grateful no one was seriously hurt and credited the pilot's heroism, wishing Tiffany a quick recovery. Tiffany, endorsed by President Trump in the governor's race, was returning from a Republican dinner in La Crosse County at the time.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A plane in a lake is the kind of story where everybody involved comes out looking fine, the pilot for landing it and the congressman for surviving it. The only thing left to watch is whether it shows up in a campaign ad as proof of grit or gets quietly filed under bad luck. Either way, the lake wins no endorsements.
