Brazil's National Data Protection Agency fined TikTok's parent company ByteDance roughly $29.9 million for mishandling data belonging to children and teenagers, and ordered the deletion of data collected in violation of the rules.

TikTok has committed to a compliance plan that includes stricter default privacy settings for under-16 accounts, stronger parental controls, and tighter content filters.

The fine follows Brazil's broader crackdown on social platforms, including a 40-day block of X in 2024 and a recent order suspending Discord livestreams after a teenager was allegedly encouraged to harm herself on a broadcast.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A near-$30 million fine sounds like real accountability until you remember it's a rounding error for a company ByteDance's size. The 'compliance plan' promise is the corporate equivalent of writing yourself a permission slip after getting caught, and regulators will need more than TikTok's word to know it sticks.
