Michigan vets outline everyday impacts of Iran War, airing frustrations with GOP leadership

Veterans and Democratic-aligned groups protested outside a Lansing gas station Friday, tying record gas prices to the ongoing Iran war and demanding U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett explain his voting record. Speakers included veterans who served in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, one of whom questioned what, if anything, the current war has accomplished for ordinary Americans.

The Senate voted down the latest House war-powers resolution 49-50 on Thursday, even though Barrett has backed four such measures limiting the Iran operation. Critics point instead to his March and April votes against earlier war-powers resolutions, and his support for a $95 billion budget including $60 billion for defense.

Barrett counters that the funding bill never mentioned Iran and was about troop readiness, asking pointedly how his opponent's math works if that bill supposedly fueled a war it hasn't passed the Senate to fund. Separately, veterans raised alarm over the VA's Oracle Health electronic-records rollout, with a GAO report cited showing just 4 of 18 recommendations implemented; Barrett noted Congress has subpoenaed Oracle's CEO and founder over the delays.

A politician who voted for the money but not the war, standing next to veterans who say those are the same thing, is about as clean an argument as a wet dog. Everybody in this story gets to be technically right and still leave the gas station looking bad. The war grinds on, the records system still doesn't talk to itself across state lines, and the only vote that seems settled is the one that already happened.
