Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has sued Pfizer and CEO Albert Bourla in St. Lucie County court, alleging the company's COVID-19 vaccine marketing was unfair and deceptive and seeking damages plus an injunction. The complaint claims Pfizer hid data on safety risks while publicly insisting there was none, and that it sought to discredit critics by calling them 'criminals.'
Pfizer responded that its claims have been 'accurate and science-based' and that the vaccine has a 'favorable safety profile' across billions of doses administered. Notably, a Florida statewide grand jury convened at Gov. Ron DeSantis's request found in January 2025 no evidence that vaccine manufacturers broke federal or state law, though it did flag cozy ties between regulators and companies like Pfizer and Moderna.

A state can convene its own grand jury, get back a verdict of no wrongdoing, and then file a lawsuit anyway built on the same underlying grievance; that's allowed, but it's worth noticing out loud. Pfizer insisting its marketing was always science-based is the company's standard answer regardless of which year's lawsuit is asking. Somewhere between the grand jury report and this complaint, the facts didn't change much, only the venue did.
