Heavy rain and floods in northern Vietnam submerge homes and disrupt economy

Heavy rain across northern and north-central Vietnam this week, with some areas topping 50 centimeters, has flooded more than 2,000 homes, blocked major routes and isolated over 1,000 households, authorities and state media said. Ninh Binh and Thanh Hoa provinces were hit hardest, with roughly 10,014 hectares of rice and other crops submerged and thousands of livestock killed.

Streets in Hanoi flooded nearly a meter deep Thursday, disrupting commutes and forcing schools and universities to close or move online. Soldiers were deployed along the rising Bui River to help residents move belongings to higher ground.

A separate weather system is expected to bring five more days of heavy rain to southern Vietnam starting Sept. 17, threatening Ho Chi Minh City with 10 to 20 centimeters of additional rain through Sept. 21. Vietnam suffered repeated severe flooding in 2025, including a typhoon that killed at least 26 people.
