A Russian frigate fired two signal flares at a Danish AS-550 Fennec helicopter photographing it in international waters off Gedser on September 14, Denmark's Defence Command said. One flare passed close enough to the aircraft that officials called it out by name, though the crew was unhurt and the helicopter undamaged.

Danish Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus called it a first-of-its-kind incident and said Russia's ambassador is being summoned for a formal reprimand. He framed it as evidence Russian forces are growing bolder, arriving days after Danish intelligence said it had uncovered Russian plans for sabotage against Danish defense industry.

Firing flares at a helicopter that is just taking pictures is the international version of a neighbor shooting a scarecrow to make a point about the property line. Denmark is right to be annoyed, and summoning an ambassador is about the most formal way there is to say ‘knock it off.’ Whether Moscow hears it that way is another matter entirely.
